On approach to Launceston the aircraft was flying too high trying to avoid turbulance. On final approach there occured a problem with the number 1 engine pitch lock mechanism. The propellor was feathered without applying power to the number 2 engine causing a high rate descent. During go-around the speed dropped below the minimum control speed. When power was applied to the number 2 engine the left wing dropped and struck the ground. The fire after the crash was extinguished quickly.The Fokker had logged 7500 hours and 8011 cycles. |
